The late Sheikh Zayed, father of the UAE, was truly passionate about nature and conservation. On the Arabian Wildlife Safari, you will glimpse the natural world that inspired Sheikh Zayed as a boy, with huge herds of gazelles and oryx moving across vast desert landscapes studded with groves of ghaf trees. Amongst the ghaf trees are herds of camels and along the wadi edges Arabian gazelles fed on Acacia trees.
This is, in fact, one of the largest herds of oryx in the world. The Al Ain Zoo, working under the guidance of the late Sheikh Zayed, started breeding the endangered Arabian oryx as part of a structured conservation effort, back in the 1970s. The effort has proved successful and, as well as the massive herd that you can see on the safari, many more oryxes born here have now been safely reintroduced to their natural wild environment.
