As you leave the African World Desert and look northwards, you'll see the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre uphill through the palms. Right beside it is the Oasis Garden amphitheatre, under the shade of a large, cooling canopy. The amphitheatre is generously spacious, so head up there, find yourself a good seat and settle down to watch the fascinating Bird Show. There are also regular demonstrations, where scientists and researchers from the Learning Centre bring out a selection of young animals, birds and reptiles for public viewing.
The staff is happy to answer your questions about the exhibits and tell you all about their structured efforts to improve animal welfare across the region. There may also be a display of traditional falconry, with raptors hunting Houbara birds with deadly speed and grace.
All this takes place within the area called the Oasis Garden – a tranquil, welcoming place which encourages you to take your ease. Bring out a picnic, let the children run around and play football, or simply doze in the shade of the palm trees beside the water. Just a short stroll away, there are landscaped terraces with a choice of restaurants that give panoramic views across the park. If something catches your eye that you'd like to visit, remember there's a people-mover that circles the park completely to save you from walking in the heat of the day.
