Dr. Frederic Launay is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort, where he is helping to lead the multi-billion dirham re-development of the Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort. Of particular interest to Dr Launay is the wedding of ecology and conservation to economic sustainability. Dr Launay, a trained ecologist, strategically directs the conservation, sustainability, and unique business model of the AWPR.
Prior to joining AWPR in 2007, Dr. Launay worked on various conservation and environmental projects in the Arabian Peninsula. Dr. Launay’s extensive work portfolio includes the Assistant Secretary General for Science & Research at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi; Conservation Director at Emirates Wildlife Society-World Wide Fund for Nature; and Advisor for Environment for the Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.
Dr. Launay started his career as a Wildlife Biologist in Saudi Arabia, where he established protected areas, as well as conducting reintroduction programmes for species such as the Houbara Bustard, Arabian Oryx and various species of indigenous Gazelles. After that, he moved to the National Avian Research Centre in Abu Dhabi to lead the organisation in its work on the study and conservation of the Houbara Bustard.
Launay holds a PhD in Animal Ecology. He is a Steering Committee Member for the IUCN Species Survival Commission and Chairman of the IUCN/SSC Reintroduction Specialist Group. Dr. Launay was also recently appointed as a Board Member and Director General of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.
